How to Fix a Squeaky Voice: Tips for Women and Men
A squeaky voice gets in the way: people hear it as childish, unsure or nervous, even when you’re talking sense. Most of the time a squeaky voice isn’t something you’re stuck with. It comes from a tight throat, a raised larynx and shallow breathing, and exercises can fix those habits.
Why your voice sounds squeaky
- A raised larynx. When you’re nervous, your larynx rises and your voice goes up with it.
- Muscle tension. A tight neck, jaw and tongue narrow the space the sound needs.
- Chest breathing. Without breath support, the voice relies on the vocal folds alone and sounds thin.
- Speaking above your range. Many people get used to speaking higher than their natural note, out of imitation, shyness or a wish to sound softer.
- No chest resonance. The sound lives only “in your head”, without the low overtones.
How to find your natural pitch
Say “mm-hmm” the way you agree with someone without thinking. The pitch of that “mm-hmm” is usually close to your comfortable speaking note. Right after it, try saying a sentence at the same pitch: “Mm-hmm, I agree.”
Exercises for a squeaky voice
1. Yawn
A slow yawn with your mouth closed lowers the larynx. Remember that feeling and say “ahh” from it. 5–7 reps.
2. Sigh of relief
Breathe out with a quiet “haaa”, like after a long day. The sound will come out low and relaxed: that’s your anchor point.
3. Humming into your chest
Hold an “mmm” on a low, comfortable note with your hand on your chest. Aim for a buzz under your palm. 5 sets of 10 seconds.
4. Sliding down
Say “oooo” and glide your voice smoothly from high to low. Stop at the bottom of your comfortable range and say a short sentence there.
5. Relaxing your neck and jaw
Slow head tilts, shoulder rolls and a massage of the chewing muscles near your ears: 2 minutes before every session.
6. Reading aloud and checking yourself
Read a text aloud, letting your pitch fall at the end of every sentence. Record yourself and compare with your recordings from a week ago. If your recorded voice still sounds strange to you, here’s why that happens.
Women vs men
| Women | Men | |
|---|---|---|
| Common cause | A habit of speaking “softer” and higher than is comfortable | Nerves, a tight larynx, sometimes a voice change that never fully finished at puberty |
| Goal | A warm, resonant voice that still feels like yours | A steady, calm voice in your natural lower range |
| Key exercise | Humming into your chest and “mm-hmm” | Yawning and sliding down |
If a man’s voice stayed high after his teens and keeps “cracking”, it’s worth seeing a voice specialist (a phoniatrist or laryngologist): sometimes professional help is needed.
Make the exercises a habit
In the Голос app, you start with a recording: you read a short passage aloud and get feedback on your timbre and pronunciation. Then you get a weekly plan of short daily exercises, about 10 minutes a day: breathing, articulation, reading aloud. After a week, you record again and get a progress report. Hearing your voice change keeps you motivated.
FAQ
Can I get rid of a squeaky voice completely?
In most cases, yes, if it comes from habits and tension. Noticeable changes usually appear within 1–2 months.
Will speaking lower damage my voice?
Not if you stay in your comfortable range. The one thing to avoid is artificially forcing your voice down: that’s bad for your vocal folds.
