Chest Voice: What It Is and How to Develop It

Chest voice is the sound you make when you can feel the vibration in your chest, and your voice comes across as warm, rich and confident. It’s how broadcasters, good lecturers and people you could listen to for hours tend to speak. Anyone can develop chest resonance, man or woman.

How to tell whether you speak with your chest voice

Put your palm on your breastbone and say a sentence the way you normally would. If your palm feels a clear vibration, your chest resonance is working. If there’s barely any vibration and the sound sits in your throat or nose, you’re speaking from your vocal folds alone or pushing everything “into the mask”, without support.

Chest voice vs head voice

Feature Chest voice Head voice
Where you feel the vibration In your chest In your head, face and nose
Pitch Lower Higher
Tone Warm, rich Bright, ringing
Best for Conversation, presentations, negotiations Singing high notes, emotional emphasis

A pleasant speaking voice blends both, but chest resonance is its foundation.

Exercises to develop your chest voice

1. Humming with your hand on your chest

Hum a long “mmm” on a comfortable low note until you feel a buzz under your palm. 5 sets of 10–15 seconds.

2. The bell

Say a low, drawn-out “bonnng”, imagining the sound coming from your chest like a bell being struck. 10 repetitions.

3. The sigh of relief

Sit down, relax and breathe out with an “aaah”, as if after a long day. That’s your natural chest sound; remember how it feels.

4. Chest tapping

While you sustain the vowels “ah”, “oh” and “oo”, tap gently on your breastbone with a loose fist. The sound will wobble, which helps you feel the resonance.

5. Words with M and N

Say slowly: “mommy”, “moon”, “morning”, “money”, “nine”, lingering on the consonants and keeping the buzz in your chest.

6. Phrases in chest register

Read short phrases with your palm on your chest. Let your pitch drop at the end of each phrase without squeezing your throat.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Pushing the sound down. Chest voice comes from relaxation, not effort.
  • Speaking too quietly. You need breath support, otherwise there’s no vibration.
  • Tucking your chin into your chest. It squeezes your larynx; keep your head level.

Practise with feedback

In the Голос app you read a short passage aloud, record it and get feedback on your timbre and pronunciation. Then you get a weekly plan of short daily exercises, about 10 minutes a day, and after a week you record again and get a report that shows how your sound has changed. If your recorded voice still sounds strange to you, here’s why that happens.
