Daily Diction Exercises: 15 Minutes That Will Change the Way You Speak

Clear speech is a skill, not a talent. Diction depends on how freely your lips, tongue and jaw move, and those muscles can be trained like any others. Below is a 15-minute daily routine you can do at home, in the car or right before an important meeting.

Why diction gets blurry

  • Lazy articulation. Your lips and tongue only move halfway, so sounds smear together.
  • A tight jaw. Your mouth barely opens, and vowels sound muffled.
  • Speaking too fast. The ends of words get swallowed.
  • Running out of breath. By the end of a sentence you’re out of air, and your speech turns mumbly.

The 15-minute routine

Warm-up (3 minutes)

  1. Open your mouth wide, as if yawning, then close it. 10 times.
  2. Move your lower jaw left and right, then forward and back. 10 times each.
  3. Puff out your cheeks and roll the air from one cheek to the other. 30 seconds.

Lips (3 minutes)

  1. Smile and pout. Stretch your lips into a wide smile, then push them forward into a pout. 15 reps.
  2. Lip trill. With relaxed lips, blow out a “brrr” like a horse. 30 seconds.
  3. Say slowly and clearly: “pa-po-poo-pee, ba-bo-boo-bee”. 5 times.

Tongue (4 minutes)

  1. Clock hands. Stick your tongue out and move it from one corner of your mouth to the other. 20 times.
  2. Brushing teeth. Run your tongue around the outer surface of your teeth. 10 circles in each direction.
  3. Hoofbeats. Click your tongue like trotting hooves, louder and then softer. 30 seconds.
  4. On one breath, say “t-d-t-d-t-d” and “k-g-k-g-k-g”, gradually speeding up.

Syllables and tongue twisters (5 minutes)

Pick 2–3 tongue twisters and say each one three times: first in a whisper with exaggerated articulation, then slowly at full voice, then at your normal pace. For example: “She sells seashells by the seashore”, “Red lorry, yellow lorry”.

Finish by reading a paragraph of any text out loud with the same clear pronunciation.

How to make it stick

  • A cork or a pencil. Hold a pencil between your teeth and read aloud for 1–2 minutes. Afterwards, speaking without it sounds noticeably clearer.
  • Record yourself. Once a week, record the same text and compare.
  • Every day. 15 minutes daily works better than an hour on weekends.

With the Голос app, you record your voice, get feedback on your pronunciation and timbre, and a weekly plan of short exercises, diction included. In 2–3 weeks, the people around you will hear the difference too.

Frequently asked questions

How soon will I see results?

The first changes usually show up after 2–3 weeks of daily practice; a lasting skill takes 2–3 months.

Will these exercises help if I lisp or can’t pronounce certain sounds?

The exercises will strengthen your articulation, but speech sound disorders are best worked on with a speech therapist.
